Short answer

The two most useful 2026 studies on local reviews are BrightLocal’s Local Consumer Review Survey, which measures what customers do, and Whitespark’s Local Search Ranking Factors, which collects what local SEO experts say drives rankings. They point the same way: customers want higher ratings, more reviews, and fresher reviews, and the ranking signals experts rate highest are the same ones.

What local SEO experts say about reviews

Source: Whitespark, Local Search Ranking Factors 2026

Whitespark’s Local Search Ranking Factors report, published November 6, 2025 as its 2026 edition, scores ranking factors based on a survey of local search experts. In its Local Pack/Maps table, these review factors rank:

  • High numerical Google ratings: rank 6 (score 181)
  • Quantity of native Google reviews with text: rank 9 (score 170)
  • Recency of reviews: rank 11 (score 164)
  • Sustained influx of reviews over time rather than in bursts: rank 14 (score 154)

Whitespark also notes that review signals and behavioural signals are growing in importance for 2026. These scores are expert opinion about relative importance, not measured ranking effects or percentages.

What this means for a local business

  • Know your rating to the decimal. A growing share of customers filter at 4.5 stars.
  • Aim for at least 20 reviews, and keep adding them steadily, not in a single burst.
  • Reply to every review with something specific, and reply quickly.
  • Remove only what breaks Google’s rules. Honest criticism stays, and a professional reply is the right response.
